Lajos Barta

Emigration

ISBN: 9783775739948 (HB - G)

The oeuvre of the polyglot, enthusiastic European Lajos Barta (1899-1986) is closely linked with the historical events of his native country. When art was abused and independent works of art disparaged for propoganda purposes in the course of the founding of the People's Republic of Hungary in 1949, Barta continued his creative avant-garde work in secrecy: while he produced tondi, reliefs, and sculptures in the style of Socialist Realism as an - apparently assimilated - sculptor, as draftsman in inner emigration he remained committed to abstraction. Bartha's creative phase coincided with the political uprising and the social turn of 1956: he was one of the first in the People's Republic of Hungary to create large-scale, abstract sculptures, after immigrating to Cologne above all in the Rhineland. The catalogue provides thorough insight into his oeuvre and acknowledges his drawings in particular in a contemporary historical context.
