Tim Dirven - Yesterday's People

ISBN: 9789078487012 (PB - E/ NL)

Since 1996 Tim Dirven has been working as a photojournalist for Belgian newspaper 'De Morgen'. Well known for the sensitive quality of his images and their high degree of commitment he has produced many probing and captivating photographic reports in both Belgium and foreign countries. The exhibition 'Yesterday's people' shows a selection of works reflecting the impressive portrait of an era Dirven has created for the last ten years. On display are photographs recording, for instance, folk festivals in Guatemala, Buddhist monasteries in India, psychiatric patients in Romania, AIDS victims from Ivory Coast, religious rituals in Iran, the poorest states in the US, leprosy and TB patients in Bangladesh, ex-child soldiers from Mozambique and farm life in Kyrgystan. In making these images Dirven captures the essence of each story in a series of grainy, esthetical images, with a preference for the deserted landscape or one single person. Both in 1997 and 1998 Tim Dirven was awarded as best Belgian press photographer. In 2001 he won the third prize in the famous World Press Photo of the Year competition. In 2004 he carried of the Fuji Prize for the fifth time with a reportage about recycle architecture in Armenia. Since 2001 Dirven is associated with the Photo Agency 'Hollandse Hoogte' (NL) and 'Panos Pictures' (GB). Occasionally he works for magazines like National Geographic, Time and Humo.
