Hyun-Sook Song

Where at Home - Paint or Die

ISBN: 9789464366006 (HB - EN)

What role does (cultural) identity play in art? Hyun-Sook Song (b. 1952) grew up in a South Korean mountain village. In 1972 she moved to West Germany, where she worked as a nurse. Long before obtaining international renown as an artist, she encountered xenophobia on a daily basis in the Federal Republic of Germany. During that period, drawing and writing letters and journals brought about deep change in her life: the calligraphic symbols from her mother tongue morphed into an expressive pictorial language, which melded Oriental and Western elements. This led her to develop a unique style of painting, which goes beyond the national or cultural idioms of art. In this biography, Jochen Hiltmann presents a multifaceted portrait of Hyun-Sook Song's development and her involvement with European modern and contemporary art. He also shows how his own, Eurocentric take on art has been changed and expanded by his acquaintance with Song's origins and art. In collaboration with Zeno X Gallery and König Books.
