Joana Vasconcelos

I'm Your Mirror

ISBN: 9788417048815 (HB - E/ S/ P)

Joana Vasconcelos (Paris, 1971) is without a doubt the most prominent Portuguese artist in her generation, particularly after her participation in the 2005 Venice Biennale and the magnificent exhibition she presented at the Palace of Versailles in 2010. Her oeuvre draws inspiration from her country's popular culture but also from the most recent theoretical debates in contemporary art. She uses countless materials, from house appliances to tiles, fabric, medicines, toilets, pots, plastic cutlery and much more to create sculptures and installations that stand out for their large scale, chromaticism and exuberance, and which sometimes include lights, sound effects and even movement. I'm Your Mirror-a title that plays homage to Nico, the famous German singer who sang I'll Be Your Mirror along with the New York band The Velvet Underground-brings together thirty works that comprise the exhibition of the same name at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, including some of her most famous sculptures and installations, such as Burka and The Bride. The book also includes texts that delve into Vasconcelos' oeuvre, as well as many images of the works and exhibitions that have marked her career-path.
