Art Deco Collectibles

Fashionable Objects from the Jazz Age

ISBN: 9780500518311 (HB - E)

The very first guide to some of the most appealing and sought-after examples of portable Art Deco design. In the 1920s and 1930s Art Deco style influenced everything from art and architecture, interiors and furnishings, automobiles and boats, to the small, personal objects that are part of everyday life: cigarette cases and lighters, powder compacts, minaudières and cosmetic accessories, watches and jewelry, and even cameras. Surprisingly, despite the continuing strong interest in Art Deco, there has never previously been a book devoted to these objects, let alone one with such consistent, high-quality photography and carefully researched period illustrations, such as film stills and advertisements, that help bring the collectibles to life. The objects in this thematically structured book demonstrate Deco style at its most alluring, as well as the modernity, excitement and social revolution of the Jazz Age. The items then were the height of fashion, and to many they remain sought after as collectibles. They demonstrate an era of closer cooperation between designers and manufacturers, who aimed to produce goods that were not only fit for purpose, but also well made and beautiful.

Rodney Capstick-Dale co-founded the original Albemarle Gallery, London, in 1987, where his interest in modern British art focused on early abstract painting of the 1920s and 1930s. Diana Capstick-Dale trained as a graphic designer in Lausanne before completing an MA degree in stage design and working as a set and costume designer.
