The work of the Spanish artist Isabel Miquel Arqués, who has lived in Antwerp for fifteen years, is inspired by her environment; in particular the artistic dialogue with other female artists such as Karen Blixen, Virginia Wolf and Georgia O'Keefe.
In Beyond Borders she uses images and text to connect her own life with that of the Danish writer Karen Blixen (1885 - 1962), whose best-known books, Out of Africa and Babette's Feast, have been successfully filmed. Arqués does this by means of dazzling photographs and serigraphs, and by means of short but well-chosen prose and poetry fragments. Arqués visited Rungstedlund, Blixen's house which is now a museum, several times. She photographed the objects that Blixen used on a daily basis, things that formed her physical reality. On the basis of this, a parallel story emerged in Arqués's imagination, her story, which slowly intertwined with that of Karen Blixen. As she took a photo of the carpet in the living room, her thoughts drifted away. She no longer saw a carpet but a road map, a starting point and a destination, intersections and side paths, a life course. In other pieces she saw Blixen's travels, the countries she had visited, seas and landscapes.
