Dali & Magritte

ISBN: 9789493039209 (HB - E)

This autumn, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels are devoting a very special exhibition to Salvador Dalí and René Magritte (11 October 2019 - 9 February 2020). The show will highlight the relationship between the two Surrealists and explore the undeniable influence they exerted on one another. Dalí and Magritte met in Paris in the spring of 1929 and in August that same year, the Catalan artist invited his Belgian counterpart to visit his home in Cadaqués. This 'Surrealist Summer' of 1929 - Éluard, Miró and Buñuel were also in attendance - proved immensely important to both painters. Dalí and Magritte shared a quest for the limits of reality: they challenged our gaze and overturned our certainties. Their style and personalities were very different and their paths eventually diverged, yet a fascinating relationship exists between the Catalan and the Belgian. The exhibition sheds light on the personal, philosophical and aesthetic connections between these two Surrealist icons, based on over 100 paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, films and archive documents.
