At first glance, James Ensor (1860-1949) and Roger Raveel (1921-2013), but also their works, seem totally different. The two Belgian painters do not only belong to two generations, but their origins and their backgrounds different. However, when we look more closely, we discover common features. What characterizes them is their attachment to their native land. Just as Ensor was never able to leave Ostend, Raveel remained loyal to Machelen-aan-de-Leie all his life. The two painters, who have a very strong personality in common, were quickly considered Einzelgänger. James Ensor has points in common with Impressionism, Symbolism and Expressionism but ultimately goes beyond known artistic currents, as does Roger Raveel who with his new and refreshing vision of reality - which art critics would later call the "New Vision". - rebelled against the pictorial standards in vogue after the Second World War. Thanks to the power of their imagination, the simple representation of reality is outdated.
